Crown Estate: 2007 fish farming awards

AFTER the success of the inaugural 2006 Crown Estate Scottish Salmon Farmer Awards, the search is on for this year’s winners.

The awards reward innovation and best practice in Scottish salmon farming and will recognise salmon farm operators who employ the highest standards of salmon husbandry; perform well in export markets; support local communities, and farm with a high level of environmental awareness. They will be presented at a ceremony and dinner in Inverness on May 31.

The winners’ shortlist will be announced at the Aquaculture Today 2007 conference dinner in April.

According to Ian Pritchard, Head of The Crown Estate’s Scottish Marine Estate, the industry-backed scheme also demonstrates The Crown Estate’s commitment to the future development of salmon farming in Scotland.

“Much of the best practice and innovation in salmon farming has been developed here in Scotland. Scottish salmon still retains its reputation as a top-quality product and these awards help to celebrate and promote this success,” he said.

“The 2006 awards highlighted important aspects of best practice throughout the Scottish salmon industry. I am confident that companies will again rise to the challenge to achieve greater recognition and success in the 2007 awards.”

Sid Patten, Chief Executive, Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation said: “After the enormous success of the 2006 Awards, I have no doubt that Scottish salmon farmers will be vying to highlight a bigger and better selection of innovative projects, new developments and standards of excellence. This is a great way to promote and reward the industry's achievements.”

There will be honours for the best farm (supported by EnviroCentre); best added value (supported by SEERAD); best export business (supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise); best contribution to sustainability (supported by Aurora Environmental Ltd); and best community initiative (supported by Fusion Marine).

To reflect the range of company sizes within the industry, from the small niche player to the larger multi-nationals, the top title of Salmon Farming Company of the Year will be awarded in two categories. The Bank of Scotland is supporting the small-to-medium category, with Skretting supporting the other for medium-to-large firms (4,000 tonnes and over per annum).

Open to all companies farming salmon in Scotland, and free to enter, the scheme is sponsored by Special Publications, publishers of the trade magazines FISHupdate and Fish Farmer.

Entry forms and further information are available on The Crown Estate website www.thecrownestate.co.uk or by telephoning 01463 783 018.
