Working through the debate: extending social licence to aquaculture
Conflicting information regarding the environmental sustainability of aquaculture operations in Canada, and the safety and health benefits of aquaculture products has challenged public and consumer confidence. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has worked to improve public understanding of aquaculture and its governance, thereby contributing to the responsible development of this dynamic sector. Mark Burgham will explore the lessons learned from working at the centre of a very polarized debate.
Mark Burgham is currently the Associate Executive Director of the Aquaculture Management Directorate in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The Directorate provides national leadership and co-ordination on policy and management for federal responsibilities related to aquaculture.
Mark joined the Aquaculture Management Director in 2001 after 8 years in various policy positions at Natural Resources Canada, and a previous 5 years with provincial ministries of Environment and Natural Resources.
Mark holds an M.Sc. from the University of Ottawa and B.Sc. Honours from Queen’s University.
