Transport company puts welfare first
Paul Armstrong-Wilson, Managing Director of Solway Transport Ltd has become involved with drawing up live fish transport standards with interested organisations from the RSPCA's Freedom Food to DEFRA.
According to Mr Armstrong-Wilson, "Innovation is always a risk, especially in a small industry with such specific equipment. But both for efficiency and welfare, businesses serving the fish farming industry must be prepared to keep moving forward."
Solway transport have been nominated for a Fit for the Future Award for Innovation, not least because they are continually looking for new ways to improve the service and products they offer. They keep abreast of current issues, such as traceability, and adapt their fleet of vehicles to match the needs and requirement of live fish.
Commenting on their nomination, Mr Armstrong-Wilson told Aquaculture Today: "We are very pleased to be nominated for this award. We are especially grateful to all our customers, particularly Marine Harvest who have been very supportive and whose input has been invaluable during both designing and testing new equipment.
"Welfare is now the most important aspect of live fish handling, with retailers demanding ever higher standards at all life stages. We are pleased to be involved with many of the new codes of practice and are learning as much as we are contributing."
