Fish Farmer reports on welfare developments

Our conference sponsors, Freedom Food was set up by the RSPCA in 1994 to improve the welfare of animals farmed for food and offer consumers a greater welfare choice. Did you know that nearly 12 million salmon are covered by the scheme today?

Fish Farmer Magazine reports:

"The implementation of RSPCA welfare standards by Freedom Food across a variety of species – including chickens, laying hens and pigs - has generated major welfare improvements for hundreds of millions of animals and salmon are no exception.

"The standards are based on science, coupled with practical experience, and cover every stage of a salmon’s life from hatching through to slaughter. They also include detailed requirements for health, feeding, management, stockmanship and slaughter.

"All salmon producers are subject to rigorous annual assessments by specially trained assessors and spot checks by RSPCA Farm Livestock Officers. Traceability checks are also carried out on labelled products - where a Freedom Food assessor will pick a product off the supermarket shelf and trace it back to the farm it came from - to ensure that it is labelled correctly.

"Products from Freedom Food approved salmon producers are currently available in Co-op, Costco, Fresh and Wild, Selfridges, shops at Loch Fyne and National Trust restaurants, as well as online from a number of independent smokehouses and Donald Russell, Britain’s leading mail order meat supplier."
