Clare Island's offshore achievements

Clare Island Work Boats

Clare Island Seafarms is one of the most exposed salmon farms in the world. Located in the raging but pristine Atlantic Ocean, six km off the coast of County Mayo in the West of Ireland. Clare Island, now part of the Marine Harvest Group, is comprised of five sites, two smolt sites, two on-growing dites and a harvest site. All of the farm's cages are moored individually due to the high energy conditions.

While off-shore training and advanced engineering are costly, there are obvious benefits of the farm's location, not least a natural environment for the fish, with huge sea water exchange and reduced risk of sea lice.

Clare Island's salmon is certified by the organic authorities of four European countries: France (Agriculture Biologique); Germany (Naturland); Ireland (IFOGA); and Switzerland (Bio Suisse) - a notable achievement.

Despite severe conditions, Clare Island Seafarms has succeeded in producing excellent quality and high levels of productivity. They have been recognised for these achievements by Aquaculture Today, having been shortlisted for a Fit for the Future Award for their contribution to the finfish sector.

A spokeperson for Clare Island told us: 'We are delighted and proud that all the hard work which it takes to run a site as unique & exposed as Clare Island has been recognised. This would not be possible without the commitment and continuous efforts of the Clare Island Seafarms team '
