Breeding allowing fish to fight disease successfully

New developments in technology is allowing the creation of disease-resistant fish, the UK premier aquaculture conference has been told.

Speaking on the first day of the conference, in Edinburgh, Dr John Ralph, from Scottish research company Landcatch, said there were 12 salmon breeding programmes in the world as companies vie to use the new DNA testing technologies.

He said his company have microtagged 20,000 fish and are tracking scores of “families” seeking to encourage the breeding of hardier fish.
