You must make your product more practical to get into shoppers’ baskets, industry told at conference

Salmon and other forms of seafood will miss out on a new enthusiasm for healthy eating unless fish dishes are made more practical and convenient, a leading analyst has told the Aquaculture Today 2005 conference in Edinburgh.

Grenville Wall, from TNS, said the drive to eat more healthily was leading more shoppers – who had previously only done a weekly shop – to pop out midweek to stock up on fresh food.

The number of these visits has gone up by 6% year on year – and these people are not buying fish, he said. “People are buying poultry during the week, and vegetables. They are not putting seafood in that basket.”

He said consumers were only spending on average 19 minutes on preparing and cooking meals, and that trend for decreased cooking time is set to continue.

He was speaking on the second day of the Aquaculture Today 2005 conference organised by Fish Farmer magazine at the Edinburgh Marriott Hotel.
